On September 25, 2024, IFMA SF members had the privilege of touring the newly renovated Transamerica Pyramid, a true San Francisco icon! This landmark, which was the tallest building in San Francisco from its completion in 1972 until the Salesforce Tower surpassed it, celebrated its Grand Reopening on September 12th.
The $1 billion renovation, funded by luxury real estate firm SHVO, includes a half-acre privately owned public space at the base called Redwood Park. Designed by Tom Galli, this park features original trees from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The building’s distinctive pyramid shape, designed by architect William Pereira to allow more natural light to reach the streets below, was preserved. It was also built to withstand earthquakes, with a steel frame and a foundation extending 52 feet below ground.
The recent upgrades focused on sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures. During the renovation, several historical artifacts were uncovered, including old photographs and documents from the building’s original construction. The extensive renovation spans an entire city block in the Financial District, encompassing the Pyramid, two adjacent buildings, and an expanded Redwood Park, which now boasts new public art installations, enhancing the space’s aesthetic appeal.
Members explored these upgraded facilities with our enthusiastic tour guides: Head Engineer Doug Petersen, and General Manager Chris Walter, who shared fascinating insights into the building’s rich history in San Francisco.
A must-see!
